Reflections of Matter

Jarid S. Johnson ~ Photographer

When I was young and still figuring things out, photography was one of the many creative avenues I explored early and often, inspired mostly by my father, Homer, but also by Ansel Adams, Richard Avedon and Annie Leibovitz.

I did know this old building, Bill Graham’s Winterland, was going to be torn down and I needed to document its last show.

At the same time, my passion for music enticed me to see music all over the Monterey and San Francisco Bay areas; this is when I started attending shows at Winterland. I experienced many of those shows through the lens of my camera, processing my own film and printing my own photos.

Organizing thousands of photos can look like a daunting task. I needed a focal point. My photos of the Closing of Winterland represent a dedicated visual theme, an event I approached with the specific mission of documenting more than just the performance; I wanted to explore the building, the line scene, the goings on before, during and after the show.

A moment in time represented by a photo elicits memories the same as a familiar smell, however, the preponderance of digital imagery in the world today is shared in an instant, forgotten in the next.

  • Having the ability to view a photo hanging on a wall, to ponder the contents, context and impact of that image allows the mind to drill deep into recollections long forgotten, to bring forth the past, to reignite excitement and passion.

Take a trip back in rock history and enjoy these rare photos in your home or give them as a gift to stir and refresh long lost memories of this magical, historical event, The Closing of Winterland, December 31, 1978.
